Videographer vs Content Creator? Who Should You Hire For Your Wedding Day?

Updated: Jul 1

With the recent emergence of content creators in the wedding industry, many couples are debating whether they need to hire a videographer and a content creator for their big day. In this guide, I will delve into the differences between the two, and the importance of hiring the right wedding professional for your day.

The Big Debate

Do I look like I know what "content creation" is?

As a wedding videographer with over 10 years experience shooting hundreds of weddings, I've seen many trends come and go (burlap wrapped mason jars anyone?). Like it or not, the rapid growth of social media over the course of the past decade or so is one trend that is definitely here to stay. In the age of instant gratification, there is no wonder why social media content creators have carved out a slice of the wedding industry. Often times, they'll take over your Instagram/TikTok for the day, and live post your wedding as it's happening. Doesn't get more instantaneous than that.

I've seen many videographers in the industry meet this sudden influx of influencers with big "old man yells at cloud" vibes (these kids with their iPhones and TikToks m i rite?). After all, we were here first and they could be costing us future clients, right? Wrong. Sure, content creators may create videos and reels for their clients, but that's where the similarity between content creation and professional wedding videography end.

Social media content creation is not an adequate replacement for professional videography, nor should the two be considered one in the same. I'm here to delve into the importance of hiring the right professional for your day, address why you might consider hiring both, and offer my insights to help you make an informed decision.

Why Choose A Wedding Videographer?

Hey, it's me.

As you navigate through the myriad of decisions involved in planning your wedding, hiring a professional to capture the essence of your day through video is paramount. If your wedding videographer is anything like me (or is me??), they will come from a professional film-making background. With our technical expertise, we understand how to frame shots, capture essential moments, and weave together a beautiful narrative that reflects the love shared between you and your partner. Videographers specialize in encapsulating the emotions, the laughter, the tears, and the memories that unfold during your wedding day.

The Pros Of Hiring A Pro

Professional wedding videography offers a variety of advantages over what a content creator can do with their phone. I've got a whole post about the advantages of videography, but I'll highlight a few here:

Expertise : Professional wedding videographers have honed their craft through years of experience, ensuring they can capture the essence of your day flawlessly. I personally have filmed over 300 weddings throughout my career. As you can imagine, I've seen some things. The good, the bad, the ugly (I'll save those stories for another post!). All of these experiences help ensure that there is no curve-ball that can be thrown to us that we can't handle.

Quality : The equipment, editing skills, and attention to detail provided by a professional ensure that your wedding video is of the highest quality. The end result is a wedding film you will want to look back on year after year, and will stand the test of time. Sure the TikToks from your content creator will be fun to look at the week after your wedding. But when you crack open that 5 year anniversary wine and cozy up on the couch, what are you going to fire up on the TV? Your professionally filmed 4K wedding video that encapsulates all the feels from your day.. or a handful of 10 second tiktoks?

Professional Audio: A skilled wedding videographer knows how to properly capture clean audio throughout your day. We achieve this by using professional microphones and audio recorders (and about ten thousand backups, you can never have enough backups!). Your ceremony, vows, toasts, etc. will all have crystal clear audio that a content creator will not be able to replicate.

Why Choose A Content Creator?

While I may have an obvious bias for videography, I have never been one to tell a newly engaged couple who they should or shouldn't hire for their big day. If social media is your jam, you're an influencer with thousands of followers, or you just want some fun bts footage from your day, a content creator might be for you! Your content creator will use their cellphone to capture fun behind-the-scenes photos and videos of you and your guests throughout your day. Often times they will even take over your social media account for the day, so you can just relax and enjoy the day, letting your content creator make posts for you.

The best part is, any great content creator will have plenty of experience working along side your photo and video team. I have worked with some awesome content creators recently, we were all able to work very well together, ensuring we were all capturing what we need.

Why Not Both?

We've stressed the importance of hiring a professional wedding videographer to capture your day, and covered the benefits of hiring a social media content creator. Hiring both can give you the best of both worlds! Also, if your wedding videographer is anything like me, they may even offer content creation as part of their packages! So, if you already have a wedding videographer for your day, ask them if content creation is something offer. You'd be surprised at how many videographers are jumping on the trend (if you can't beat em join em, eh?)

The Takeaway

Your wedding day is a significant milestone in your life, and choosing the right professional to document it is a decision that should not be taken lightly. While both a wedding videographer and a content creator bring unique skills to the table, the expertise, experience, and attention to detail offered by a professional wedding videographer are unmatched. By emphasizing the importance of hiring a professional for your wedding day, you can ensure that your memories are beautifully preserved for years to come.
